Kansas Global Signs Export Promotion Contracts

The Kansas Department of Commerce, along with the City of Wichita, has signed contracts with Kansas Global Trade Services. This will give Kansas businesses direction on the road to the international marketplace.

The contracts provide funding for two separate but complementary export promotion efforts by Kansas Global, a Wichita-based non-profit organization providing export promotion services throughout the state.

The state contract for $125,000 was signed this month by Kansas Commerce Secretary Antonio Soave and represents the third year of a public-private initiative between the state agency and Kansas Global.

Under the state contract, Kansas Global coordinates export services to Kansas businesses. A portion of the contract is dedicated to the Regional Export Plan, reflecting the services provided to businesses in the 10-county region of south-central Kansas.

The actions by the state and local government are evidence of the growing awareness about the importance of international trade in domestic economies, said Karyn Page, CEO and president of Kansas Global.

“These appropriations demonstrate a visionary perspective shared at the state and local level,” she said. “Exports represent 24 percent of the state’s economy and every billion dollars in exports supports 6,000 jobs.”

The market for Kansas goods and services is becoming increasingly global, and Kansas has to be prepared for this changing economic picture, according to Kansas Commerce Secretary Soave.

“The services provided by Kansas Global are essential as the State of Kansas expands its presence in the international marketplace,” he said “Kansas businesses have a wealth of goods and services that are in demand around the globe, and this initiative will help those businesses meet that demand.”

The Regional Export Plan, funded by local governments and private businesses, is a product of the Brookings Institution’s Global Cities Initiative, which targets a select group of cities around the country. The five-year plan will create an export eco-system that connects export services to manufacturing and service companies, creating a long term global competitive advantage.
