Black & Veatch Providing Excellence in Engineering

Engineering is one of the strongest driving forces behind the technological innovations that are stimulating the Kansas economy, through increasing efficiency and enhancing the quality of life in the state. In the heart of the Midwest, industry-renowned Black & Veatch calls the state of Kansas home. The engineering firm, named one of Forbes’ top 500 Largest Private Companies in the United States, provides engineering, construction and consulting services in the energy, water, telecommunications and government markets.

Founded more than 100 years ago, Black & Veatch initially got its start in water and power projects in the Midwest, but quickly expanded nation-wide and is now worldwide. Black & Veatch was started by University of Kansas engineering graduates, Ernest Bateman Black and Nathan Thomas Veatch.

The Overland Park-based company has been a long term partner with the state and federal governments, dating back to Harry Truman’s presidency. The company has worked on a vast array of projects over the years, from supervising the construction of military training camps in WWI to producing a 60-megawatt power-generating unit for the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand.

Today Black & Veatch continues to expand their engineering footprint, growing to more than 100 offices worldwide, with a revenue of $3 billion in 2015. Black & Veatch has also grown from 12 employees in 1915 to over 12,000 worldwide today. This engineering powerhouse continues to deliver client solutions on a number of platforms and is continually highly-ranked for its design work in power, telecommunications and water infrastructure by Engineering News-Record.

On November 14th of this year the company was selected to design, procure and oversee construction of the largest natural gas power station in South America. Black & Veatch will incorporate advance technology turbines, which will reduce gas emissions and increase efficiency. This technology will be the first of its kind to be implemented on the South American continent. The firm was selected because of its longstanding reputation of understanding customer needs and delivering exemplary work.

While it is now a global company, Black & Veatch still emulates Kansas values through their commitment to integrity, respect and accountability, which are at the heart of its core culture. They also believe in giving back to the communities they live in, and do so using the Black & Veatch Foundation. The Foundation focuses on philanthropic work, as well as improving access to science, technology, engineering and math educations.

“Black & Veatch is proud to have our world headquarters in Kansas,” said President of Legal, Risk Management and Government Affairs Tim Triplett. “The university system in Kansas helps fuel our growth particularly through providing high-quality engineering professionals.”

Triplett, who co-chairs an initiative in Kansas City called KC Design + Construct, points out that the presence of the number of engineers and engineering companies in the region surpasses most major U.S.

“The state of Kansas and its university systems’ engineering programs will continue to strengthen the economy and create more vital jobs in Kansas and across the region,” Triplett said. “Kansas also has a great K-12 education program for science, technology and math that helps develop young engineering talent.”

The company provides world-renowned engineering solutions and has formed a culture that ensures respect at the highest level. Because of these accolades, Black & Veatch has been the recipient of many awards. Just in 2016, Black & Veatch has received more than five awards, including the Kansas Department of Commerce’s Minority and Enterprise Development Corporation of the Year, as well as the 2016 Gold Edison Award and the 2016 ACEC – Kansas Engineering Excellence Award, both for its microgrid located at its headquarters in Overland Park, Kansas. This microgrid provides electricity using a combination of natural gas, solar and geothermal energies and battery storage.

Black & Veatch is a long-standing and deeply-rooted Kansas company. It continues to be a leading global engineering firm by providing excellent products and service on every project.
